எழுதிய எழுத்து
எழுந்து தெறிக்கவும்...
எண்ணற்றோர் மனதை
எட்டிப் பறிக்கவும்...
பத்திரிகையானது
முனைய வேண்டும் !
பத்திரிகையாளரும் அதனையே
பயபக்தியோடு நினைய வேண்டும் !
பக்கத்துக்குப் பக்கம் இன்று
பார்க்கின்றேன் திரைச் செய்தி !!

வாடுகிறேன் நான்
விறைப்பெய்தி !!
குடியரசு நாட்டில்
முடியரசு பற்றிய துணுக்கினால்
இந்நாளில் புன்னகை அரும்புமா?
இளவட்டம் தான் அதனை

நாஞ்சில் நாடனும்

பிரசுரிக்குமுன் ஆராய்ந்தால்
அவை என்னணம்

அவ்வாறு வடிகட்டாக்கால்
அளவொண்ணா துயரில்
ஆழ்த்தாதோ உம்மை

உமது நோக்கம்
பத்திரிகை பெரிதும் விற்பதிலா ?
எழுத்து என்றும் நிற்பதிலா?
காசு பார்ப்பதிலா ?
கருத்தாழமிக்க படைப்புகளால்

தம்மை வாசிப்பார் வகையறிதல்

இதுவே பத்திரிகைக்கு அவசியம் !!
இவையிருக்க தேவையில்லை
தங்கம், பணம் எனும் வசியம் !!
அவனுக்கு “மோட்டார்”
அவளுக்கு “அவள்”
அரசியலுக்கு “ஜூனியர்”
அருளுக்கு “சக்தி”
அடியெடுக்கும் மழலைக்கு ”சுட்டி”
உழவுக்கு “பசுமை”
தொழிலுக்கு “நாணயம்”
திரைக்கு “சினிமா” என
ஆலம் விழுதாயிருக்கிறீர் !!
ஆயினும் பழுதாயிருக்கிறீர் !!
அனைத்தையும் கொண்டு வர
அதிகமாக உம்மிடம் அச்சிருக்கலாம் !
அனேகர் அதனில்
அல்லும் பகலும் கிறுக்கலாம் !!

அஞ்சல் ஒன்றை
அனுப்பினேன் அன்றே
வசை மொழிந்து !!
உம்மிடமிருந்து வந்தது
உடனுக்குடன் பதில்

The below is the letter that I posted to Vikatan last year. Mr. Srinivasan (then Editor) and then Mr. Asokan (who recently took charge) acknowledged it, appreciated it, and agreed that they received numerously many such letters from the readers of vikatan

Dear Editor of Vikatan Deepavali Malar 2008,
I chose to write to you on this day over a topic that you probably are well aware is causing a ruckus among the educated public of Tamilnadu. I chose to write to you because, I believe in your magazine for ethics, breadth of coverage and the ability to kindle the intellectual acumen in the general populace in making them to think, act and talk in ways that advances the state and nation.
But more importantly, I chose to write to you because I don’t want this great magazine of yours to surrender to circulation pressures and present to the public the same things that a third rated magazine serves today – namely cinema, cinema and cinema.
It is in this context that your chosen cover for Vikatan Deepavali Malar – 2008 with actor Vijay on it concerns me.
In many ways, you have a profound duty and tradition to uphold. In the year 2026, which is not very far off, your magazine would be a century old. Yesteryear owner/editor Shri. Balasubramaniam went to jail and later won in court over an issue cover that in those days brought to life what was the true state of affairs. The whole of TamilNadu stood by Vikatan in those days. You have in your stable the most amazing set of cartoonists through whom you have always brought out the very best. Despite all these, sadly, your cover of cine actor Vijay in the prestigious “Deepavali Malar 2008” serves no justification to your true glory.
You may argue that the weekly edition of Ananda Vikatan reflects the pulse of the economy, reflects the status of the citizen of TamilNadu, reflects the prevailing mood in the state and that there is no need for the Deepavali Malar to do the same. That is all the more reason that the cover of the prestigious once a year Malar should not fall along similar lines of your weekly editions.
In many ways, the general populace views the annual Deepavali malar issue of yours to be the “signature edition” of Vikatan for the year. By this, I don’t mean all the public in TamilNadu who reads it, but by the section of people who read Vikatan and take its words close to their heart. You know this fact very well. You know very well the section of population who goes to the extent of even buying the Malar and their tastes and expectations. You know that they are the people who have a vested interest towards Vikatan and its pursuits in journalism - be it freedom of press or intellectual rigor. Why then would you want to squander your supreme status that you enjoy amidst them by putting such a lousy cover that too on such a vital issue?
I understand very well that the one thing in life that does not change is change. I agree that with several demands placed on its shoulder, a magazine must also change with the times be it to suit to customer tastes, dedicating pages to advertisements in the wake of pricing pressures and confronting dwindling readership. But admist all that chaos, the magazine must attempt to maintain its identity, for it’s that identity that defines the magazine and separates it from the rest. In that context, none of those pressures should be driving a magazine to put out the very same things that the other magazines have chosen to be their primary territory to increase circulation, namely cinema. Vikatan is beyond all that. Vikatan stands for value and I see no value in the cover that you chose.
Every year, there is a huge expectation among the citizens of TamilNadu versed in carnatic music about who is going to be honored with the title “Sangita Kalanidhi” from Music Academy for the year. In the same way, there is a huge expectation again among the upper echelons of the society in TamilNadu about what cover the Vikatan Malar is going to have that year. If you believe that neither exists, then the magazine might not as well bring out the edition at all. If even one of them exist, then at the least the magazine must attempt to fulfill that expectation or satisfy that group.
You might ask – Well, what else could the cover have had? As a reader in tune with the times, I know very well that it cannot have a cover that brings sadness to the mind because it is coming out on the day of Deepavali which is a joyous and festive occasion. I know very well that it cannot have a cover that reflects current affairs because that is the duty of weekly, and fortnightly magazines in your umbrella. The cover must be deep, must reflect the joy of the people and more importantly, must be remembered.
This year, you could have done all that. You could have chosen Viswanathan Anand, world #1 in Chess, who is just from our/your backyard. Even for those people who during their later years would not remember as to when Viswanathan Anand became world #1, they would remember it as “the year he came on the cover of Vikatan Deepavali Malar”. Such is the power of your magazine and more specifically the malar. It bears a stamp of authority that you should not let slip.
Or you could have chosen a traditional cover focusing on Hinduism, temples, gods and goddesses. You cannot defeat the argument by saying “we cannot put a specific religion on the cover because we may make people of other faith irate”. The reasoning here is you are not bringing a “Vikatan Ramzan malar” and therefore, I see no reason why such a cover would be considered offensive by people from other religions. Moreover, you should realize that the people who buy Vikatan and treasure it are the people who are beyond communal and political divide. You know very well who those people are and what triggers and excites them, the least of which is cinema.
Or you could have chosen 5 youngsters – one with a Doctor coat, one with an engineering caliper on his/her hand, one from kalakshetra, one from a prestigious IT firm and one being “Vikatan Thaatha” and you could have put a caption “Next generation India”. You could have sent a signal that says “ I am with the students, young and energetic, and ever changing” by such an artistic cover.
Or you could have chosen 3 living legends from the field of literature – say Mr. Sujatha, Mr. Ra. Ki. Rangarajan and Mr. Ja. Ra. Sunderasan.
When the first issue of Vikatan Deepavali Malar (after it starting printing again) came out, I remember that issue as full of “past glories”. It was laden with late Shri S.S. Vasan’s achievements, his nobility and all that. Yet, it struck a chord. The expectation that it drove in the minds of avid readers was not a shallow one. Nostalgia set in. The glorious days of the past when Vikatan Malar ruled the literary world came to the forefront of all readers.
Today, you can say that Vikatan is still the #1 in the literary world. But you need to understand that this world is fast developing a sense of defeat. They are fast thinking that even Vikatan is not immune to pressures, and will do anything to shore up the bottom line. I want Vikatan to understand that. You need to understand that there is a section of people in TamilNadu who don’t fall for hype, who don’t fall for glamour but who seek truth, are open minded and who stand by principles. They have to be kindled. Their imagination must be set on fire. Only then could the magazine rest that it has done its job. Who else is better suited to do that job today, than Vikatan? Which edition is better suited to that, than the glorious “Deepavali Malar”? The cover to the magazine is its “aatma”. It reflects the book in just one page. There is nothing more important than the cover. Just as “the face is the index of the mind”, the cover is the index to the magazine’ character.
Conduct a poll among your closest circles, ask for honest opinion and get back answers about the cover of the 2008 Malar. The answers would take you back. If the results prove that you have done something wrong, I rest my case.
Finally, let me remind you that Deepavali Malar 2006 had actress Asin on it. I could have written this letter last year, but could not bear to see one more issue with one another actor. Since when did you think that Vikatan readers have such a shallow taste? Vikatan is slowly digging its own grave if it is thinking that people are expecting too little. In reality they are demanding more, a lot more.
In many ways, this is a fast paced world – fast food, ready made garments, even 20/20 cricket. No matter how fast anything is, core fundamentals should not change. Core values should not change. Tradition and moral fabric should not change. They are the ones that bind us and propel us to higher achievement. It’s the fabric that got us what we got in 1983, 25 years back. Vikatan needs to think about how to knit such a fabric. It can do it, if it stays away from the herds.
Is it too much to expect perfection and moral commitment from a magazine which has always showed the difference between nonsense and incense?

Really i go with you sir...To increase the circulation the Vikadan has launched an advertisement that a girl can be impressed by a guy who reads vikadan ...This seemed to be very cheap and clumpsy from vikadan....
